About Sand Blasting
Sandblasting, also known as abrasive blasting is the forced propulsion of a stream of abrasive material against a high-pressure surface. This is done to smoothen a rough surface or roughen a smooth surface. You can also change the shape of a surface or remove surface contaminants using the Sand Blasting method.
How does Sand Blasting work?
In the Sand Blasting procedure, a pressurized fluid of compressed air or a centrifugal wheel is propelled using the blasting material called the media. There are several variants to the sandblasting process as per the applied media. Some of them are highly abrasive, while others are mild.
The most abrasive among them all are metal shot blasting and sandblasting. Today, many abrasive variants such as glass bead blasting and plastic media blasting with ground-up plastic stock/walnut shells and corncobs are also used.
Caution while operating the Sand Blasting procedure
For some operatives, certain substances can cause anaphylactic shock if they are allergic to any media. It is recommended to use a mild version, such as soda blasting with baking soda. Also, other alternatives, barely abrasive or nonabrasive, are ice and dry-ice blasting.
About Sand Blasting Machine
A Sand Blasting Machine is also known as a shot exploder. It is a portable source of electric current that reliably fires a blasting cap to trigger an explosion. This feature is mostly used in mining and demolition. Although traditionally run on an electric medium, today’s sand blasting machines are battery-powered. They operate using key switches and push-buttons, showing their non-resemblance to the older designs.
A capacitive discharge blasting machine works by charging a capacitor from a battery, followed by discharging the capacitor through an external circuit. This circuit is called a firing line, which fires the blasting cap.
During the idle time of the machine, the operator can connect an “internal shunt” across the output terminals for any stray voltages induced in the external circuit. The source of these stray voltages can be from nearby radio transmitters. To counter this, we harmlessly short-circuit it without triggering the blasting cap. The sand blasting machines also include an abort feature to discharge the internal capacitor without cap firing.
